The Train the Trainer course aims to help teachers and trainers develop the generic skills they need to support teachers in their local contexts. The course focuses on two key areas
– The design and delivery of training sessions
– Observation and feedback of teachers
In the final part of the week there is a focus on trainer development and suggestions for extending and adding to the competences focused on during the course.
The Cambridge English Train the Trainer course can be used as a professional development course for teachers preparing to be trainers, or as CPD for current trainers wishing to extend their skills.
The course is introductory in nature and not intended for trainers with considerable experience in these areas.
It should be noted that the course is open to native and non-native speakers of English. An absolute minimum of level B2 is required with a preference for C1 or C2 on the Common European Framework.
Areas covered include the following and are designed to address differing training contexts such as pre-service, in-service and with native English teachers or non-native English teachers as much as is possible on a short introductory course.
• Tutor roles: trainer; developer; assessor
• Modes of input: delivering training sessions
• Observation and feedback: oral and written
• Designing training programmes
• People management: interaction analysis and counselling skills
• Materials: language and linguistics; methodology; theoretical background to methods and approaches
The online version is delivered over 8 weeks (approximately 4 hours per week). The course is made available on a week by week basis. Participants work through each week at their own pace and can revisit tasks as desired. Feedback on tasks is provided for download in the course itself. Candidates must be able to dedicate time to complete the course over the 8-week schedule.
The course has been created on the Futurelearn platform, but is a closed course so is not available for open enrolment. Access is provided by Cambridge English Language Assessment for a maximum of 30 participants on each course.
The face-to-face course is delivered in real time by an onsite ‘Lead Trainer’ who sets up, guides and gives feedback on tasks.
The course takes place over 30 hours spread across 5 days.
